Thanks to everyone that turned up, supported, took part and helped make the 2006 European Freestyle Kayaking Championships and Festival an incredible success. The whole week was perfect including the 30 degree plus weather!! Amazing performances from all the paddlers and memorable rides were thrown down by James Bebbington, Simon Strohmeier, Greg Nicks and Claire O’ Hara made it all the more special. Without the following support the event would not have been possible:
The Sponsors: Peak UK. Teva. Sues Canoes. Canoe Kayak Mag. Pyranha. Wave Sport. Palm / Dagger. Downtime. Desperate Measure, High n Mighty. Squarerock. Alpkit. BCU Freestyle.
The officials: Emily, Muppet, all the judges, time keepers and scribes. Cookie and Shep for their tireless commentary. Tim Rowland for the website. Snakey for everything squirty.
The site: Ian Bebbington and his team at the National Watersports Centre. Steve Golds for the event PA. Burdock, The Wedding Present and Leon for their letting us broadcast their tunes on Sky Sports. Farners of Matlock for the loan of the TV which got used for watching football!!! Eddy and Steve from the River Legacy for the Marquee. Richard from Sues Canoes for making the ramps that made the hole. BCU World Class for the loan of their mini bus and trailer.
The parties: Hoopla and PJ for looking after the bar and rugby club. Holger and Nico for Jaegermeister. Cheese and Ollie for Djing. Emily for the Moneyshot2 and great live music. Burdock and Dirty Cherubs for rocking out. Steve Golds for lighting.
The food: Hazel Smith, David, Peter, Val and Maggy for the buffets, meals, teas, coffees, cakes and lunches all week.
The side events: Wig, Mirrors and Viking Venture Scouts for putting on the polo challenge. Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club for the come and try it. Matt Tidy for the newcomer event. Jim Evans for the Alpjam and big air. Natalie Flynn and Burton Youth Theatre for the opening ceremony.
Special thanks to my great friends - without their endless support, the event would not have happened. Notably Leafy Dave for for joining my 6am mornings up to our necks in icy cold water building the hole!! For the warm tea too and sorting all the press, media and TV. Matt Stephens ( and Nanny ) for his computer programming expertise, again and again updating things as the rules got changed!!! Bev & Trev Chrimes for doing anything and everything I needed. Jim Evans and Claire O’ Hara for their banner making expertise and lots of other stuff…
Thanks and apologies to anyone else I’ve forgotten… so many people made it all possible.
The European Championships will be broadcasted prime time on Sky Sports Sport Nation series this Autumn.
Love, beers and thanx Pete xx

The third day of the second European championships has been a scorcher with the temperature nearing the 30’s and the paddling being just as hot. With some sore heads yet again from a great night last night, where we saw the money shot video competition and with entries from France and the UK it was a great combination of local boating to French snow boating. The final winner was Adam Norfolk from the UK who walked away with a whole host of prizes for a very good film.
Today’s boating kicked of with the men’s quarters, which again was a spectacle of cleans ends hugs loops with a few phonics monkeys and mc nasty’s for good measure, which carried on through out the rest of the heats until every discipline was down to five paddlers who will then battle it out for the title of European champion. There was notable rides mainly from Jutta Kaiser from Germany who yesterday was not going to paddle because of a bad shoulder but battled her way through her heats and ended up in first position. James Bebbington from the UK also impressed with a flurry of new school moves and super cleans fighting his way to first in the mens and I had some good rides in the C1 and ended up in top position, so in every category it is looking promising for the British. Tonight looks to be a good party as well for the losers with music from DJ Cheesy and free shots for every drink bought at the bar. |

| The second day of the Europeans kicked of with some sore heads from the first losers party of the week but many were clear and focused on the day ahead, with some amazing rides from the Canadian and Ladies classes and one of the best squirt events I have ever seen. Many were knocked out and will party tonight but some are still concentrating on the event ahead as they plan their runs for the next few days. The full results can be seen on this site and more news can be found on UK Freestyle and Canoe Cafe |
